>> The Security Traders Association began 2012 with its new board of governors. Newly appointed to the board are James A. Brigagliano, Sidley Austin, LLP, Washington, D.C.; S. Five governors were elected in October at STA’s annual business meeting. They are Geff Gioia, Longbow Research, Independence, Ohio; Patty Kevin-Schuler, Boston Options Exchange, Chicago; Jon Schneider, BATS Global Markets, Lenexa, Kansas; Fred Mason, JP Morgan Asset Management, New York; and Alan Marshall, Luther King Capital Management, Dallas. Holdovers from the previous board include Peggy Bowie, Manulife Asset Management, Toronto, Charles Padala, New York; and John Russell, Franklin Advisers, San Mateo, Calif.
>> Peter Forlenza joins UBS to head U.S. equities trading. Forlenza, a 22-year professional, spent the last two years as the head of equities for MF Global Holdings before its collapse. At UBS, he’s charged with regional management and development of the bank’s equities business as well as growing the division’s growth strategy. He is also a member of the bank’s equities management committee.
Prior to MF Global, he was chief executive at global hedge fund Outpost Investment Group. He has also done stints at Banc of America as head of equities and was a managing director at Citi. He will be based in New York and report to Mike Stewart, global head of equities.
>>Robert Meier has joined privately-owned investment bank Dahlman Rose & Co. as head of equity sales and trading. He reports to Kim Fennebresque, chairman and chief executive of the firm. A 15-year industry veteran, Meier most recently spent three years at Gleacher & Co., where he was head of equities. Prior to that, he was co-head of equities and head of sales for Cowen & Co. He started his career as an attorney providing legal advice on corporate transactions.
>>Stuart Tolander joins S&P Capital IQ as a vice president in sales. Tolander, a 24-year veteran, was previously with trade analytics provider QSG, where he was head of sales, spending six years. At Capital IQ he will be marketing data to institutional money managers, including quants. Tolander began his career on the buyside, trading six years at Principal Financial Group in Des Moines. He also worked as a sales trader at both Cantor Fitzgerald and McDonald & Co. before moving to early electronic trading venues OptiMark and Harborside. Tolander reports to Carolyn Bancroft, a managing director for the Americas in sales and client services.
>>Kevin Malloy joins institutional brokerage Transcend Capital as global director of business development in institutional sales and trading. Malloy, a 16-year veteran, is working with chief executive Vernon "Butch" Jones to build out the firm’s institutional trading business. The firm offers electronic and voice execution services, as well as direct market access, algos and routing. Malloy reports to Jones.
>>James Brooks has been hired as vice president of U.S. product development at NYSE Euronext. Brooks was previously with Nasdaq OMX, where he spent 10 years and was an equities strategist. At NYSE Euronext, he will have a similar role and will be involved in pricing, routing and relationship management, particularly among the automated trading community. He will work across asset classes. Brooks reports to Joe Mecane, executive vice president and co-head if U.S. listing and cash execution.
>> Brinson Patrick Securities, a New York-based brokerage, hires Timothy Studley as a sales trader. Studley, a five-year veteran, previously worked as a sales trader in the electronic trading group at Barclays Capital, where he advised institutional buyside firms on algorithmic trading strategies and optimal trade execution. Prior to Barclays Capital, Studley worked for Lehman Brothers, where he focused on establishing trading connectivity for hedge funds, mutual funds, and pension funds.
>>Chris Hempstead and Dong Lee join WallachBeth Capital’s exchange traded fund trading desk. Hempstead, a 20-year veteran, joins as director of ETF execution. He was previously head of ETF trading for Cowen & Co. and has worked for several exchange specialist firms, spending most of his career as a market maker at Susquehanna International Group.
Lee, a 12-year ETF veteran, joins the firm as a salesman after four years managing ETF distribution for The Vanguard Group’s institutional clients. Prior to WallachBeth, Lee was vice president of institutional sales for Legg Mason. Both report to senior principals, Michael Wallach and David Beth.
>>Leucio Iacobelli joins NYSE floor broker Cuttone & Co. as a sales representative. Iacobelli, a 28-year veteran, was previously a salesman at wholesaler Surge Trading as a vice president. Prior to that, he was director of equity products with Murphy & Durieu. Earlier in his career, he also held senior positions in broker-dealer sales with UBS and Knight Capital Group.
>> RenCap Securities appointed Richard Lumelleau as head of equity sales to lead its New York sales team. Lumelleau spent the last 11 years at Goldman Sachs as head of EEMEA equity sales in New York. Prior to that, he covered emerging European markets at Credit Suisse. He reports to global head of equities Yonatan Gozdanker and chief executive Anthony Simone.
>> Electronic broker Liquidnet named John Kelly chief operating officer and a member of its leadership team. Kelly, a 30-year veteran, is based in New York and responsible for revenue growth across all global businesses. Kelly worked with former Goldman Sachs president John Thornton over the last six years, providing advisory services to private investors. Earlier, as an executive at Société Générale in the U.S., he was head of capital markets and chief operating officer for the U.S. investment banking business. He reports to chief executive Seth Merrin.
Lugene Forte joins as head of Liquidnet’s U.S. sales and trading operations. Forte, a 25-year veteran, spent the last three years as a senior vice president in transition services and in algorithmic trading services at ITG. Prior to that, she co-founded and was chief operating officer at First Principle, an institutional fixed income broker-dealer. She was also head of institutional sales for Autranet, an independent research firm that sold to BNY in 2002. She reports to Kelly.
