TRADERS ON THE MOVE: Barclays Names New Euro Equity Head

Barclays has named Richard Evans, previously its COO for equities in EMEA, as its new head of equities business in the region. Before joining Barclays in 2012 he was head of Delta One strategies in European equities at Morgan Stanley and, prior to that, was global head of electronic trading at Citigroup. He was also a founding board member of the Turquoise trading platform. Evans has taken on the role from Jonathan Beebe, who has been handed a wider remit in his role as global head of equities trading within the bank’s markets business. In other Barclays news, the firm officially named Jes Staley CEO last week.

Tim Webb has stepped down from managing BlackRock’s biggest hedge fund, the $5.7 billion diversified fixed-income strategy, handing control to his deputy Tom Parker. Webb, who ran the hedge fund for five years, also left his post as chief investment officer of the model-based fixed income group to devote more time to leading the firm’s international fixed-income business. Parker, who was deputy CIO for the hedge fund and model-based unit, took over as CIO for both.

Jamal Taraz, Virtu’s former head trader in Europe who left in January 2013, has joined the London office of Global Trading Systems, a large computer-driven trading company based in New York that is preparing to ramp up its trading in European securities. He joins as head of its business in Europe, and will focus on equities – both cash and derivatives. The company has already begun some European trading, via brokers and direct memberships, and is seeking approval from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, anticipating new European rules in 2017 that will require proprietary trading firms to have a similar level of oversight to brokers, according to people familiar with the matter.

The former chief investment officer of global equities at Pimco, who left the bonds giant after it cooled its diversification into stocks earlier this year, has returned with her own consulting boutique. Virginie Maisonneuve has launched Maisonneuve Global Investors, based in the City of London, to advise investment boutiques and investment teams at large asset managers on global thematic trends, business leadership and digital innovation. Maisonneuve left Pimco at the end of June after the $1.5 trillion bond specialist decided to retrench from equity investing and close four active funds. The move came roughly a year and a half after Maisonneuve had joined in a high-profile switch from Schroders, where she had been head of global equities.

Drexel Hamilton hired Cody Acree as a senior equity research analyst and David Williams as equity research associate, broadened TMT coverage. In this role, Acree and will cover semiconductor and related stocks for Drexel Hamilton, supported by Williams.

With more than 18 years of experience as a semiconductor analyst, Acree, who holds the FINRA Series 7, 16, 24, 63, 65, 86 and 87 licenses, will provide additional depth to the number and types of mid-to-large cap technology companies Drexel Hamilton covers. He joins the firm from Ascendiant Capital, where he served as Head of Equity Markets and Director of Research. He began his career with Southwest Securities and has since covered a broad range of technology companies for firms such as Frost Securities, Legg Mason and Stifel Nicolaus.

Cody is a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a non-commissioned intelligence officer during Operation Desert Storm.

Williams was most recently an analyst with Ascendiant Capital Markets covering small cap technology companies. Previously, he was an analyst covering homebuilding and building products companies with Williams Financial Group.

Both will report to Barry Sine, managing director of equity research.
