Shirley Liu, Managing Director, Head of Derivatives Risk Solutions, Mizuho Americas, won Fixed Income Leadership at Markets Media Group’s 2022 Women in Finance (U.S.) Awards.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
It was a total surprise and I could not believe it! It is truly a reflection of my wonderful team and support system – It would not have been possible without the partnership of my teammates and colleagues, and the support of Mizuho’s senior management. The firm empowered my team to convert our vision into reality.
What makes a great leader?
I believe a great leader is someone who fully understands what it takes for each member of the team to perform at a high level. Effective leaders appreciate how complicated and time-consuming someone else’s role can be, and the potential bottlenecks or hurdles the team has to work through to achieve success. They use this knowledge to improve the team and, hopefully, the overall organization. A great leader also listens to constructive criticism and suggestions, and is not afraid to admit someone else’s ideas might just be better than her own!
What inspires you to work in this industry?
The people. I am very fortunate to be able to work with very talented and dedicated people, and I get to learn something new from someone every single day. I’m constantly impressed by the unique skill sets that my colleagues bring to the table and the different ways they approach problem solving.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
While I have been very blessed throughout my career, my greatest accomplishment is still my family. I have the most loving husband and daughter. They are also incredibly supportive of my career, even if I have to work during vacation or weekends!
How has your career been enhanced by exposure to diverse people, places, or experiences?
I’ll admit, I almost left the industry multiple times during my career. But each time, I was fortunate to have a mentor to guide me back. I have had some amazingly-talented, successful mentors over the years, both men and women. It important to be exposed to different people who can give you guidance from different angles.
What’s your advice to the next generation of women in finance?
Believe in yourself! Don’t be shy, speak up and share your ideas.
