*Martin Coughlan joined Knight Trading Group as head of the company's London-based international trading team and institutional sales force. Coughlan joins from Citigroup where he was head of pan-European equity trading. He also managed the firm's trading staff and operations in London and Europe. At Knight, he will oversee the London office, which trades international equities, including local shares and American Depository Receipts. The London hub also handles sales trading for non-U.S. institutions seeking executions in U.S. equities.

*March Jourdren joined Lehman Brothers as managing director and head of European client sales. He was previously a managing director and head of the global products group in the equities unit at Goldman Sachs.

*Mike Smith, formerly with BB&T Capital Markets, has joined Davenport & Co., Richmond, VA., as a vice president and institutional equity sales trader.

*Securities analyst Richard Repetto and his associate Todd Malky have joined Sandler O'Neill & Partners. The two were formerly with Putnam Lovell NBF, which eliminated its New York-based equities operation in August. Repetto covers the stocks of such trading firms as Knight Trading Group, Instinet, LaBranche and Investment Technology Group.

*Nasdaq, building its sales team, announced the appointments of new sales executives, Janet Lewis, vice president of business development, and Jeffrey Singer, regional president, Eastern region. Lewis and Singer will both report directly to Bruce Aust, executive vice president in the corporate client group. Lewis joins from SunGard Business Integration while Singer comes aboard from 4R Systems.

*Morgan Keegan in Memphis, hired Sean Miller to oversee trading for Canadian clients out of its New York office. Meanwhile, the firm pushed deeper into the Canadian market, opening an equity capital markets institutional sales office in Toronto. The office will be co-managed by Katherine Hayes and Rodney Vander Meersch. Both pros were previously employed at SG Cowen.

*Alfred Hayward, Jr. was named CEO of LaBranche & Co. LLC., the specialist subsidiary of LaBranche & Co. Inc. Hayward, previously a director and executive vice president of LaBranche & Co. Inc., replaces Robert Murphy who resigned. Murphy's job had been under review since September after he reportedly made unauthorized comments to the press.

*David Whitcomb, Jr. joined the Chicago Stock Exchange as senior vice president and chief regulatory officer. Whitcomb will oversee the work of all market regulation programs at the exchange. Whitcomb joins the Windy City mart from Charles Schwab & Co., where he was a vice president in the compliance department since 1999. At Schwab, Whitcomb provided compliance coverage for the firm's capital markets and active trader units. Whitcomb began his career at the Securities and Exchange Commission where he was an attorney and branch chief in the division of enforcement from 1989 to 1999.

*Gregory Quilici was named director of U.S. cash equities for Merrill Lynch in San Francisco. He comes aboard from Goldman Sachs, where he spent six years in sales and trading for U.S. West Coast customers.

*The Securities and Exchange Commission appointed Peter Bresnan as acting district administrator of the Boston office. Bresnan is serving as the deputy chief litigation counsel in the SEC's Division of Enforcement in Washington, D.C. In that post, he shares the responsibility for the commission's nationwide litigation program. Bresnan joined the commission in 1995 as its assistant chief litigation counsel. Bresnan is replacing Juan Marcel Marcelino, who had served as Boston district administrator since 1993.
