The Commodities Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission approved a plan allowing certain foreign security index futures to be treated as broad-based index futures. The authority might have lapsed if the SEC and CFTC hadn't acted. The CFTC also approved an order that allows security futures to be based on a share of an exchange traded fund, a trust issued receipt or a share in a closed-end investment management company.
