Computer Science for Cyber Security (CS4CS) is a free, three-week, summer program that allows high school women to be introduced to the field of cyber security and computer science at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. DTCC is proud supporter of the program this year and hosted a full-day event for the students to visit DTCC headquarters and learn more from our professionals in related fields. During this session, attendees heard a brief overview of cyber security and some more functional aspects of the field. The students were walked through the NIST framework and learned that data is one of the most important things to companies, and that security of their data is not just a technology issue. Dan Varela, Threat Management Associate, Cyber Incident Analyst at DTCC explained to the young women in the audience that, You actually have a leg up within the cyber security space. There are millions of unfilled positions at the moment and a shortage of talent to fill them. Of the current positions filled, only 11% are filled by women, which means there is an even bigger opportunity within cyber security for a majority of this audience. Companies want to diversify their workforce and gain new perspectives within this area. You have a great opportunity, so continue to learn and grow. Following the presentations and speed networking, the students were provided a tour of the collaborative agile workspace. The tour gave them a flavor of the type of professional workspace they might work in the future. Additionally, they were provided words of encouragement to continue their studies and consider DTCC as their future workplace by James Lee, Managing Director, Chief Technology Officer at DTCC. During this session, Bonita, Kevin, Dan, and Kelly Ann spoke about how they got started in the workforce and the paths they took to get where they are today. Each speaker mentioned several programs and ways to pave their career paths and how attendees can set themselves apart from other candidates in cyber security. Our early career business professional network, START, organized and led a speed networking session with the students and executive women in IT Professionals rotated table to table answering student questions, as well as held conversations about their interests and what they can do to pursue their career interests. Rob Palatnick, Managing Director and Chief Technology Architect at DTCC, delivered a presentation on the introduction of blockchain and cryptocurrency. Rob recapped blockchains history, discussed the debate of cryptocurrencys worth, and spoke about distributed ledger and its groundbreaking impact on the financial industry. He provided a view for where blockchain and crypto currency will go in the future, and what role DTCC will play in the coming years. All in all, Rob let it be known that there is a great opportunity for the audience to shape the future of these exciting technologies. Another speed networking session. ShareTweetShare
