Uncategorized Girls Who Code Hackathon at DTCC By Editorial Staff - August 8, 2018 ShareTweetShare 1 of 13 DTCC has embarked on a new corporate partnership with Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization established to support and increase the number of women in computer science. As part of this partnership, DTCC recently hosted a field trip for 19 students and 2 instructors as part of a Summer Immersion Program. DTCC was honored to host the event, and enjoyed assisting the participants in a highly interactive Hackathon workshop. Lynn Bishop, Chief Development Officer at DTCC, kicked off our event with a welcome speech, providing a brief overview of her career path which led her to the Chief Development Officer position and opportunities available to women in the technology space. She also provided what the day had in store. Sara Mados, Senior Business Systems Analyst, DTCC, facilitated the event. With the help of Chris Walsh, Executive Director, Area Lead Application Development, DTCC, Sara dove into the agenda, introducing the Hackathon where attendees broke into squads and faced the challenge of designing and developing a new dashboard. Using html, javascript and the Amazon cloud, the teams created a set of dynamic dashboards. DTCC volunteers assisted each of the squads along the way, with the attendees presenting their work at the end of the Hackathon. Students work during the hackathon Students work during the hackathon Students work during the hackathon Students present their findings Students present their findings After lunch, the students had the chance to get introduced to Womens Initiative for Networking & Success (WINS) Business Professional Network and speed network with women professionals in the IT field. The students were broken out into five groups and each of the DTCC IT professionals would rotate among the groups to answer a question provided by the facilitator. It was a very engaging session and the students could ask questions about the professionals careers, their everyday work, and more. She thanked everyone for participating in the Hackathon and commended their passion for the technology industry. She left the girls with five things that helped her career success: ask questions and be a lifelong learner, get out of your comfort zone, start something now, be thankful and celebrate milestones, strive hard every day to improve your skills at work and in life.
