Ashley Kryshtalsky, Director, Workflow Technology, Virtu Financial, won Rising Star at Markets Media Group’s 2023 Women in Finance (U.S.) Awards.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
Just to be listed among the other exceptional nominees is incredibly humbling and I am genuinely honored and grateful to receive this year’s Trading Platforms award. The recognition is a profound validation of the dedication and hard work that I’ve invested in my career over the past 10+ years. This recognition from both peers and industry experts further solidifies my belief in the importance of our constant efforts to build and optimize trading platforms for our clients.
I attribute my success in the platforms space to effective collaboration and communication with clients, vendors and teammates, which enables me to deliver quality results and exceed expectations. Whether supporting clients, building robust technology, or engaging in sales initiatives, these positive partnerships have been instrumental in my achievements.
What keeps you motivated?
The ever-evolving nature of the financial technology landscape and the constant challenges it presents drive me to keep growing. Building the best trading platforms in this dynamic environment demands continuous learning and adaptation. Navigating diverse teams and fostering cooperation across various disciplines is inherently motivating. Each team within the organization brings unique expertise to the table, and the challenge of orchestrating their efforts towards a common goal is both intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. The synergy from bringing together individuals with different skills and perspectives is a driving force behind the success of the projects that I’ve been fortunate to lead. Making a meaningful impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of some of the largest asset managers in the world is a powerful motivator as well. I am inherently grateful for the opportunity to work with our clients and value their feedback.
In the spirit of this award, and as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I am motivated by the desire to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive environment. Breaking down barriers and inspiring others, particularly women, to take risks and believe in themselves is a cause that I am deeply passionate about.
What’s your advice to the next generation of women in finance?
My advice to the next generation of women in finance is rooted in the lessons learned throughout my own journey. Take opportunities and make them work for you, rather than the other way around. The ability to learn quickly and contribute your unique perspective and skills is what turns challenges into opportunities. The financial industry is dynamic and those who are willing to adapt and embrace change will excel. Taking initiative pays off, even when stepping into projects beyond your domain or skillset. If you believe in your own abilities, anything is possible.
Never underestimate the power of building a strong network. Seek out mentors — both male and female — who provide guidance, share experiences, and offer support as you navigate your career. Networking extends beyond professional advancement; it’s about building a community that inspires and uplifts one another. Building and maintaining relationships, both within the organization and with clients takes work – it doesn’t just happen, but it’s worth it and fosters a collaborative environment where innovative ideas can thrive. No one accomplishes anything alone. As we ascend in our careers, paying it forward by mentoring others, especially women, fosters a cycle of empowerment and mutual gratitude.
Lastly, always advocate for yourself. Recognize your worth, and don’t hesitate to speak up for the opportunities and recognition you and your team deserve. As Alice Walker once said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” Don’t wait for the power to be offered to you — confidence and assertiveness are crucial for propelling your career forward.
